Black Mussels
Available farmed, this marine-dwelling bivalve mollusc is found in intertidal waters to depths of around 20m, often in dense clumps, attached by coarse rope-like ‘beards’ to exposed reefs, rocks and jetty pylons, and was traditionally harvested by divers off southern NSW, Victoria, SA and southern WA. The dark (brown, grey, blue, purple or black), wedge-shaped shell with a bluish-white interior is easily distinguished from other bivalve molluscs such as Pipis and Cockles. They are the only commercial species of Mussel sold in quantity in Australia.
To Store
Live shellfish should be consumed as soon as possible after purchase. Place in a container, cover with a damp cloth and keep in the warmest part of the refrigerator, usually the crisper (optimum 5ºC), ensuring that covering remains damp.
Before cooking, discard any shells that are open and don’t close when tapped or gently squeezed (you may need to give them 10-20 minutes out of the fridge to warm up first). Freeze meat for up to 3 months below -18ºC.
To Cook
If Mussels are being served in the shell, remove beards (byssal threads) before cooking by holding shells firmly closed and sharply tugging beards away from the pointy end of the shell; if Mussels are being removed from shells, cook with beards attached, they are easy to pull off the cooked Mussels once they’re removed from their shells. Lightly scrub shells with a plastic scourer to remove any sediment or barnacles。Remove from the heat as soon as they open, as they quickly shrivel and become chewy if over cooked. While traditional wisdom was to discard shells that don’t open when cooked, you can pry them open, away from the plate, and, if they smell good, eat them; if they’re bad, they’ll have a distinctly ‘off’ aroma.
All of the flesh is edible, females tend to be more orange in colour, whereas males are paler.

An email will be sent to you when we receive your order and when your order is ready for pickup. If you choose store pickup, do not start your trip to our store until receiving our pickup-ready notification email.

Delivery Progress & Legals
We are trying our best to offer you the best quality fresh food, however, we are not permitted to check the receiver’s ID when delivering by law. We only ensure that we deliver to the address provided.
Fresh food is treated as perishables and all items to be delivered is ATL (Authority to leave). We understand that ATL is not an option for some customers, therefore please ensure there will be somebody at your premises to sign the delivery package.
Failed deliveries (where ATL is not possible, or incorrect delivery address, or other seasons we cannot deliver your order) will be returned to our store. You must contact to arrange a redelivery request and a redelivery fee may occur.
While we always strive to ensure on-time delivery, there might be instances when the package may be delivered past the confirmed date. Fish Moments shall not be liable to any person if we decline to supply the product(s) for any reason whatsoever. We reserve the right to decline orders without disclosing the reason behind that action.
Please note that the delivery fees quoted on our website are based on the most economical shipment methods, we reserve the right to adjust the delivery fees at any time for your purchase orders should the lowest rate or courier method becomes unable. We are not liable for any losses or delays if we can’t reach you through the phone number or email address you provided when placing the order.
If the customer received a free gift as part of a promotion and the product or portion of the product is returned for any reason (unless it was a faulty or defective product) the free gift must be returned along with the unwanted product. Free gifts cannot be returned for refund or exchange and have no cash value of their own.
The liability of Fish Moments for any loss, damage, or injury arising directly or indirectly from one of our products for non-compliance of any of our products or for any other reason shall not in the event exceed the amount equivalent to the price of the product.
